Have you ever?
I never.
Well you should.
When one throws oneself a birthday party one gets whatever one wants. Four-layer Devil's Food Cake with dark chocolate ganache? Yes, thank you, I will.
Love white, black, and hot pink as a color scheme? Well, let's do that then, even down to the floating tissue paper pom-poms.
Love spinach enchiladas? Make that the main course.
Invite almost every female you have met in your new city over? Why not - it's your party!
I honestly had the greatest time planning this one. And every minute I spent felt like a guilty pleasure because it was all for me. (I would have loved more pictures but I forgot to take any until the first guest arrived at which point I hurriedly pointed to Jer and mouthed "camera!" I really wanted some of those great close ups that show all the hard work and fun, but alas, get your magnifying glass for the details.)
As I called to invite my new-found friends I would tell each that I was throwing myself a birthday party and I would love them to come. Most of them got a kick out of the fact that I was doing this for myself. Of course, being the lovely people they all are I had to quickly add that it was a "no presents" party (that could come off just a little wrong - "Come to my party and by the way, bring me gifts!). Instead, they could bring some snacks to share if they wanted.
We had a great time! Yummy food, lots of chocolate (the cake was so rich I could only eat 1/2 a slice, at a time that is) all topped off with my current favorite Jane-Austen-book-turned-BBC-film, Persuasion.
What a perfect birthday! How did I know that was just what I wanted? Really, you outdid yourself this time. I can't wait to see what I dream up next year for myself. I am sure to love it.

your party looks like it was a blast!
ReplyDeleteevery time i plan a party for my kids i have that same thought, "come to my house and bring a present for my child". it almost feels like i am begging them to bring more plastic crap into my house that is already full of plastic crap. that may be a bit rash, but...it is mostly true.
happy belated birthday!
It turned out SO cute! How did you make that banner? The perfect touch, I absolutely love it. And you bet I'll be throwing myself a birthday party this year!
ReplyDeleteKoryn, you're a genius! What an inspired idea. Jeff used to throw himself surprise parties in high school. He's kind of a genius, too. The party looks awesome. It's all lovely. You truly outdid yourself. Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteI love this! You have excellent taste, and I LOVE the new BBC Persuasion. What a good time. You are inspiring... Oh, and happy belated birthday!
ReplyDeleteKoryn, so I have just spent all morning being zero productive (Whit has been giving me the look)and blog stalking you! I have wondered how you were doing and what you have been up too. It has been so fun to take a peak at your new life in Utah! How beautiful and exciting. If the winter gets you down, we are just hours south (definitely worth a road trip) in sunny Phoenix and we LOVE winter visitors. Miss you. Glad you are so well.
