We spent a gorgeous afternoon with the Shumway family, some great neighbors down the street from our home. The Shumway family has six adorable, sweet, polite, generous children who are a joy to spend time with. Their mom Christin and I packed all the kids, plus a few from other families, and headed about 10 miles up the canyon to a little "lake" (more the size of a pond) called Foy Lake.Just before departure, I ran to the merchantile (known locally and from here on out as "The Merc") for our first ever fishing rod and paraphenalia. The poor kid in the store had to spell it out for me, and show me how to use the rod. Pathetic!
After gathering, packing, driving, spilling out of cars, and running up the path, we were greeted by this lovely view of mountains above us,
and the mountains across the valley. If you look in the middle of this shot, those are the beginnings of the canyons in the area. I love how this shot shows many of the formations of the area. The top of this mountain sits above the treeline, then down to the evergreens, then to the deciduous forests, to sagebrush and redrock, ending in the deep streambeds of the canyon lands. I think I could have sat here all day with a good book and a few cold drinks (sodas of course). Perhaps when school starts this just may come to pass.

Whitney, always on the cutting edge of fashion, donned the fishing hat for the event.
The day following this family fishing expedition, Parker and Dallin Shumway decided to get up at 7:30 and head out to Lloyd's Lake (a little resevoir about a mile out of town) and do some fishing on their own. Parker was so excited he was up at 6:30 making sandwiches and gathering snacks for the trek. As they boys left the house they asked when they needed to come home. Knowing Parker's stomach would not last too long on just breakfast and sandwiches, I told them to come home when they were done.
At 2:00 pm I started to worry! They had been gone for 6 hours! I tried not to be "that" Mom, freaking out when the kids are just out having fun, but I started to think about all the things that could have gone wrong, or one of them was hurt and they couldn't get to us - you know the images that can rush through the head at a time like that! Finally, at 2:45 I hopped in the car and drove up to check.
As I rounded the last bend to the lake, here come the boys. Safe, happy, FILTHY, and bearing two fish. We were all happy to see each other. I was happy they were safe and they were happy I could take all the gear back home in the car.
It seems fishing will be added to the Knudsen family list of "Awesome Things to do in Monticello."

I love the thought of Parker getting up at the crack of dawn to go fishing. I don't know why, but it really made my heart happy. Love that boy. Glad he was just enjoying the day and not in danger like 'that' mom thought :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I figured out how to look at all your comments. It made my day to go look over the months and months of them :) Love ya.
